Chapter 15

Much to her chagrin, Ben made good on his threat, and Abby ended up riding in the back of Gage’s police cruiser. It was something she’d never expected to experience firsthand, and she hated the way the people they passed on the street stared at her. No doubt every one of them thought she was a lowlife criminal being hauled off to jail. All she could think about was how horrified her mother would be if she ever found out. No, make that when she did find out. From the way Abby’s luck had been running lately, someone had already snapped a picture and posted it on social media or, worse yet, on the front page of The Clarion, the town’s newspaper.

She could see the headline now: Abby McCree, the newest member of the Snowberry Creek city council, hauled in for questioning.

Who knows, maybe the ensuing scandal would get her kicked off the city council. It wasn’t as if she’d wanted to be on it in the first place. For a few seconds, she let herself enjoy that happy thought, but she knew it was too much to hope for. Her organizational skills would buy her a lot of forgiveness from the mayor and her assistant.

At least there was one other small bright spot in the darkness. For the moment, their current destination was a nearby hospital and not an empty cell at the Snowberry Creek jail. She twisted around to look out the rearview window to reassure herself that Tripp was still behind them in her car. Gage had asked him to follow them to the hospital. Maybe that meant she’d be allowed to go home after Dayna was released. However, neither man had seen fit to inform her what the plan was, so she tried not to get her hopes up.

All she knew for sure was that Ben had taken charge of the keys to Dayna’s van and said he’d have it taken to Abby’s house. Again, did that mean that’s where he expected that she and Dayna would end up? She hoped so. Leaning her head back, she closed her eyes to shut out the whole world. Seriously, all she wanted to do was drag herself upstairs to her room and barricade herself in there until this whole mess—Josiah’s murder, the séance, and Wendy’s disappearance—were all resolved. Too bad that when things weren’t going right, nothing was ever that easy.

“Are you okay?”

She opened her eyes to meet Gage’s somber gaze in the rearview mirror. “No, I’m not, but thanks for asking.”

A large lump seemed to have lodged itself in her throat, making it hard to swallow, much less talk. “I promised myself I wouldn’t get sucked into this kind of mess again. You probably have a hard time believing that, but I swear I’ve been trying.”

She turned to face the side window, hoping he wouldn’t notice the tears trickling down her cheeks. “Yes, a lot of this could have been avoided if I’d stayed home like Ben told me to.
